In this highlight we turn our attention to a talented highly energized indie band by the name of The Temptators. I asked The Temptators a series of questions. Here is what we discussed.

Tell us a little about yourself, where you are from, grew up, what H.S./College you attended etc.

The Temptators was started by two brilliant young guitarists, Austin Lake and Bob Marshall, while they attended Hilton High School in upstate New York. tem 8It was foretold that The Temptators would become a soulfull rock and roll band, so they recruited old friend and teenage heart throb Cougar Petz, to sing lead.  When it came time to find a bass player, it seemed an obvious fit for Austin’s younger brother, Brendan Lake to join the band. Brendan left his parent’s home in Hilton to move in with Austin and Bob. Together they would turn the once party house into a music factory that would pump out instant classics. After a cold, productive winter, the band had a long set of rockin’ hits. When spring came along, longtime friend and uniquely talented drummer, Alex D’Aurelio, moved into the house and gave the vocal group the snappy back beat it required. It seemed love at first sight as the five members practiced day in and day out, recording their first full length album “Welcome Home” by the end of the summer.tem 4

Talk about a time where you have faced adversity/conflict and have triumphed.temp 2

Adversity strikes the band when sometimes our uniforms get mislabeled at the dry cleaners and we have to play in our normal clothes, which is out of the ordinary and uncomfortable for us.

What do you believe sets you apart from other artists/entertainers?

Time and distance seperates us from other bands, as well as age and ingenuity. Also the band lives in the same half-house apartment, so we have no choice but to rock, constantly.

Do you have other interests or hobbies?

The band members have many other hobbies. For example, Austin would like play baseball, maybe. Brendan likes to snack it HARD at the 7-11 down the street, and loves hangin with his kittys. In his free time, Cougar enjoys long walks on beaches with strawberries and peaches. Alex recently has no free time for hobbies, on account of his rapidly growing political career. Bob likes to stay up all night and LARP (live action role playing) that he is in the CIA.

Each member of The Temptators plays in at least one other active local band, and have all been in a number of bands prior to this. Its kind of a list so here we go…. Aweful Kanawful, aretheyestheyare, Guntrouble, Puberty (the band tem 5formerly known as panty-raid), King Vitamin, The Televisionaries, Flip shit, Beastman, Illiterate, Crue-Pie etc. etc.tem 6

Any projects you have out or currently working on?

Each member of the band has their own solo records that they work on as well. Brendan has been cooking up a fresh new one, titled “Childish Ways”, that should be out by the summer of 2017. Bob will put out TheRealBobIsDead and the sequel Microchipenis ep, at some later undisclosed date. Stay tuned. Alex has a number of very strange cassette tapes for sale under the moniker of Clibbus International. Check it out! Aweful Kanawful is the live band that plays the music of Austin’s own solo tapes of the same name (Aweful Kanawful). Cougar likes to rap sometimes.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 year?tem 7

In 5 years we would like see ourselves touring a lot more, have a record deal, or be retired.

What advice can you give to aspiring artists/entertainers?

Some advice we can give to other artists is that a good song is more important than a famous one. Also, if you dont wear pants, you can’t get caught with your pants down. Keep your head up, and your stick on the ice. And always look for ways before crossing the street.

temp 3How can we follow along in your journey? Social media?

We are more or less on all basic forms of social media (facebook, instagram etc). All current releases are on our Bandcamp page, and we are also on Spotify. If all else fails, watch the news.

About The Author

Welcome to Talker of the Town! My name is David Kramer. I have a Ph.D in English and teach at Keuka College. I am a former and still active Fellow at the Nazareth College Center for Public History and a Storyteller in Residence at the SmallMatters Institute. Over the years, I have taught at Monroe Community College, the Rochester Institute of Technology and St. John Fisher College. I have published numerous Guest Essays, Letters, Book Reviews and Opinion pieces in The New York Times, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the Buffalo News, the Rochester Patriot, the Providence Journal, the Providence Business News, the Brown Alumni Magazine, the New London Day, the Boston Herald, the Messenger Post Newspapers, the Wedge, the Empty Closet, the CITY, Lake Affect Magazine and Brighton Connections. My poetry appears in The Criterion: An International Journal in English and Rundenalia and my academic writing in War, Literature and the Arts and Twentieth Century Literary Criticism. Starting in February 2013, I wrote for three Democratic and Chronicle  blogs, "Make City Schools Better," "Unite Rochester," and the "Editorial Board." When my tenure at the D & C  ended, I wanted to continue conversations first begun there. And start new ones.  So we created this new space, Talker of the Town, where all are invited to join. I don’t like to say these posts are “mine.” Very few of them are the sole product of my sometimes overheated imagination. Instead, I call them partnerships and collaborations. Or as they say in education, “peer group work.” Talker of the Town might better be Talkers of the Town. The blog won’t thrive without your leads, text, pictures, ideas, facebook shares, tweets, comments and criticisms.
